WHAT SHOULD I BE LOOKING FOR?
Someone struggling with a mental health challenge might…
• Stop attending social events and withdraw from social groups
• Seem stressed or anxious frequently
• Appear detached and apathetic
• Misuse alcohol or drugs
• Change their eating habits - eating too little or too much
• Experienced a life-changing event or loss
• Neglect their appearance and/or personal hygiene
IS IT OKAY TO ASK IF SOMEONE’S “REALLY” OKAY?
IT IS OKAY to ask someone how they are feeling. In fact, it’s more than okay, it could be incredibly helpful in easing that person’s struggle.
Letting someone know you’re worried about them shows that you genuinely care. Letting someone know that you have noticed they’re not themselves and asking them if they’re feeling okay creates an opportunity to feel seen and heard.
I'VE ASKED, NOW WHAT?

Be prepared to listen. Don’t ask without having time aside to create space for their response. If you find yourself short on time, let them know you want to know more, plan a time to return to this conversation - and follow through.
